Peptide Storage Temperature and Shelf Life

Peptide storage temperature and shelf life explained: keep lyophilised powder at −20 °C, reconstituted vials at 2–8 °C, and what happens when either rule is.

Store lyophilised peptide powder in a freezer at −20 °C. Once mixed with bacteriostatic water, move it to the fridge at 2–8 °C. Those two numbers cover most of the storage mistakes researchers make.

Peptide Storage Temperature Chart

The right temperature depends on whether the peptide is still a dry powder or already mixed with liquid.

FormTarget temperatureMaximum safe time
Lyophilised (freeze-dried) powder−20 °C (standard freezer)12–24 months
Reconstituted (mixed with liquid)2–8 °C (household fridge)28 days
Short-term bench useRoom temp, under 25 °CA few hours only

Larger, more complex peptides tend to sit at the cautious end of that chart. When in doubt, go colder.

One thing researchers miss: freezing a reconstituted solution damages it. The ice crystals that form inside the vial physically shred the peptide structure. Once you have added bacteriostatic water, the freezer is off-limits.

Peptide Shelf Life in Powder Form

Dry peptide stored correctly at −20 °C is stable for 12 months, and many batches remain usable out to 24 months if the cold chain has never been broken. The key phrase is "stored correctly." Three things destroy powder faster than time does:

  • Heat. Every 10 °C rise roughly doubles how fast a peptide breaks down. A vial left at 30 °C degrades in days what a freezer protects for months.
  • Light. UV light breaks chemical bonds directly. Keep vials in their original box or wrapped in foil.
  • Moisture. Lyophilised peptide is bone-dry by design. Even a small amount of humidity getting into the vial starts breaking down the peptide chains. Keep the cap on, and let a cold vial warm to room temperature before you open it — that stops condensation forming inside.

Do peptides expire in powder form? Yes, but slowly if conditions are right. The expiry date on the vial assumes you have kept it frozen and sealed. A vial that sat at room temperature for a month has lost time it cannot get back, regardless of what the label says.

Lyophilised Peptide Storage

Lyophilised just means freeze-dried — the manufacturer removes all the water under vacuum so the peptide becomes a fluffy white or off-white powder. This form is stable precisely because water is what drives most of the chemical reactions that break peptides apart.

Store lyophilised vials:

  • At −20 °C as a default
  • Away from light
  • In a sealed container with a small silica gel desiccant pack if you are opening the freezer frequently
  • Standing upright so the powder is not pressed against the rubber stopper

When you take a vial out of the freezer, wait 15–20 minutes before opening. That lets the glass and powder warm up enough that room-air humidity will not condense onto the cold surface and get pulled inside.

Peptide Shelf Life After Reconstitution

Once mixed with bacteriostatic water, refrigerated peptide is generally considered stable for up to 28 days. This is a firm limit, not a conservative guess.

Bacteriostatic water — sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol — prevents bacterial growth, but it does not stop chemical breakdown. The moment water contacts the peptide, it starts a slow process where water molecules attack the bonds holding the amino acid chain together. At fridge temperature that process is slow enough that 28 days is reasonable. At room temperature it runs several times faster.

A few habits that support sample integrity within that window:

  • Use a fresh needle each time you draw from the vial. Introducing contaminants shortens the window regardless of the chemistry.
  • Write the reconstitution date on the vial with a marker. Memory is unreliable.
  • Store the reconstituted vial toward the back of the fridge, not in the door. Door temperatures fluctuate every time you open it.

Do peptides expire after reconstitution? Absolutely, and faster than most researchers expect. A reconstituted vial left at room temperature for 48 hours has almost certainly degraded meaningfully. Discard it and start fresh.

The Short Version

Keep dry peptide frozen at −20 °C, protected from light and moisture, and use it within 12 months. Once mixed, refrigerate at 2–8 °C and use within 28 days — never refreeze. Label everything with dates. These rules are simple, but skipping any one of them is the most common reason a research batch produces unreliable results.
