Peptide Storage Temperature and Shelf Life

Peptide storage temperature guide covering lyophilised powder at –20 °C, reconstituted shelf life at 4 °C, and the handling steps that protect sample.

Store lyophilised peptide powder at –20 °C for long-term keeping, or at 4 °C (standard fridge) if you plan to use it within a few months. Once reconstituted, keep it at 4 °C and use it within 28 days. Those two numbers — –20 °C dry, 28 days wet — are the practical core of everything below.

Lyophilised Peptide Storage Temperature

Freeze it. –20 °C is the right target for lyophilised peptide powder. At that temperature, the molecular structure stays stable for many months under typical laboratory storage conditions. A regular kitchen freezer runs at around –18 °C, which is close enough.

If you only need to store it for four to eight weeks, a fridge at 2–8 °C works. The powder won’t degrade noticeably over that window. Beyond two months at fridge temperature, degradation becomes a real concern worth avoiding.

A few things that matter as much as the temperature number:

  • Keep it dark. Light — especially UV — breaks peptide bonds faster than mild warmth does. A cardboard box inside the freezer is not overkill.
  • Keep it dry. Peptide powder soaks up water from the air. Once moisture gets in, degradation starts even while the vial is still sealed. Always store with the cap on tight.
  • Avoid freeze-thaw cycles. Every time you freeze, thaw, and refreeze, a little more peptide breaks down. Aliquot into single-use vials before you freeze if you can.

Peptide Shelf Life After Reconstitution

Once you add bacteriostatic water and the peptide is in solution, 28 days at 4 °C is the working guideline. After that point the peptide concentration will have dropped enough to matter for research purposes. Some sources cite up to 30 days; 28 is the conservative number and a safe rule.

Why does it degrade faster in solution? In dry powder form, the molecules are locked in place and barely react with anything. In water, they move freely and start reacting — with water molecules, with each other, and with oxygen dissolved in the solution. That process is slow at 4 °C but unstoppable. Room temperature speeds it up dramatically: a vial left on a bench for a day loses more than a vial stored correctly for a week.

Do not freeze reconstituted peptide. Freezing a solution causes ice crystals to form, and those crystals physically shred peptide chains. You lose significant potency the moment you thaw it.

Do Peptides Expire in Powder Form?

Yes, but slowly. The expiry date on a vial of lyophilised peptide is real, not just legal padding. At –20 °C, degradation is slow enough that many months is a reasonable storage window under good laboratory conditions. At room temperature (around 20–25 °C), that window drops to weeks.

The main failure modes in dry powder are:

  • Moisture getting in and starting reactions at the molecular level
  • Heat pushing those reactions faster — roughly speaking, a 10 °C rise roughly doubles how fast many chemical reactions run
  • Light breaking bonds in the peptide chain directly

A vial that has been stored correctly, sealed, frozen, and kept dark will hold potency close to the label date. A vial exposed to heat during shipping, even briefly, may be noticeably degraded before you even open it.

How to Store Peptides Long Term

For anything you won’t reconstitute within eight weeks, freeze it at –20 °C in sealed vials with as little headspace (air gap above the powder) as possible. Add a desiccant packet — the small silica gel sachet type — to the container or bag you freeze them in. That handles the moisture problem.

Practical checklist:

  • Aliquot into single-use vials before freezing so you never thaw the whole supply at once
  • Label each vial with the date you received it
  • Store inside an opaque container or wrapped in foil
  • Keep a separate fridge zone for peptides so they don’t get moved around
  • Let a frozen vial warm to room temperature before opening — pulling a cold vial into warm air causes condensation to form inside the cap and drip into the powder

When you’re ready to reconstitute, add bacteriostatic water slowly down the side of the vial. Do not shake. Swirl gently. Shaking creates air bubbles that can damage the peptide structure at the water-air interface.

The Short Version

Lyophilised peptide powder: freeze at –20 °C, keep it dark and sealed. Reconstituted: fridge at 4 °C only, use within 28 days, never refreeze. Those are the numbers that protect your sample from the moment it arrives to the moment it is used in the laboratory.
