Store dry peptide powder in a freezer at –20 °C. Once you add water, move it to a refrigerator at 2–8 °C. Those two rules cover most storage mistakes.
How to Store Peptides Before Reconstitution
Lyophilized peptides — meaning freeze-dried powder — should live in your freezer at –20 °C until you are ready to use them. At that temperature, peptides can remain stable for an extended period from the manufacture date. Check the certificate of analysis for the specific compound you are working with.
A few things matter as much as temperature:
- Keep it sealed. The powder soaks up water from the air. Even a few minutes of exposure on a humid day can shorten shelf life.
- Keep it dark. UV light degrades peptide bonds. A vial in a drawer or opaque box is safer than one sitting on a bench under fluorescent lights.
- Don’t cycle the temperature. Every time a vial warms up and cools down, you stress the powder. Pull the vial out, let it reach room temperature slowly, then proceed — and don’t refreeze.
If you only need part of a vial right now, reconstitute the whole thing anyway and store the solution. Repeatedly opening a dry vial to take small amounts exposes the powder to air and moisture every single time.
Peptide Shelf Life Before Reconstitution
Dry peptide powder kept at –20 °C holds up for significantly longer than powder stored at higher temperatures. At refrigerator temperature (2–8 °C) stability drops noticeably. Left at room temperature, you are looking at weeks, not months.
The reason the freezer wins so decisively is that chemical breakdown speeds up as temperature rises. Room temperature is roughly 42 degrees warmer than a –20 °C freezer. That difference compounds quickly.
If a vial has been sitting at room temperature for a week accidentally, it may still be usable for your research. A month at room temperature is a real problem. Use those vials first and prioritise your frozen stock for later.
How to Store Peptides After Reconstitution
Reconstituted peptide goes straight into the refrigerator at 2–8 °C. Do not freeze it. Freezing a peptide solution can form ice crystals that physically disrupt the peptide structure, and thawing can cause aggregation that you cannot always see but that affects analytical reliability.
Use bacteriostatic water — not plain sterile water — for reconstitution. Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which slows bacterial growth and extends the usable window of the solution. Plain sterile water has no preservative and should be used within 24–72 hours. That is the difference between a few days and several weeks.
Practical habits that protect reconstituted peptide:
- Label the vial with the date you reconstituted it. Twenty-eight days feels long until you forget when you started.
- Use a fresh needle every time. Pushing through the rubber stopper with a used needle risks contaminating the solution.
- Store the vial upright. Keeping the solution away from the stopper reduces the chance of contamination at the seal.
- Don’t leave it out. Thirty minutes on the bench while you prepare equipment is fine. Hours at room temperature, repeatedly, adds up.
Peptide Shelf Life After Reconstitution
Reconstituted peptide stored at 2–8 °C with bacteriostatic water is generally considered usable for up to 28 days. After that, discard it, because analytical reliability can no longer be assumed.
You can tell when something has gone wrong before the 28-day mark:
- The solution has gone cloudy (it should be clear)
- You see visible particles floating in it
- The colour has changed from clear to yellow or brown
- It smells off
Any of those means discard, regardless of the date.
If your research protocol requires small, frequent samples spread over several weeks, consider splitting a larger vial into smaller aliquots — individual portions drawn into separate vials — at the point of reconstitution. Each mini-vial gets opened once, reducing contamination risk across the full storage window.
Peptide Storage Temperature: A Quick Reference
| State | Temperature | Shelf Life |
|---|---|---|
| Lyophilized (dry) | –20 °C (freezer) | Extended — check CoA |
| Lyophilized (dry) | 2–8 °C (fridge) | Reduced — use sooner |
| Reconstituted, bacteriostatic water | 2–8 °C (fridge) | Up to 28 days |
| Reconstituted, plain sterile water | 2–8 °C (fridge) | 24–72 hours |
Freeze the powder. Refrigerate the solution. Use bacteriostatic water. Write the date on every vial. Those four habits cover the vast majority of storage failures with research peptides.
